Ancient Well GO CO

        Ancient wells can be considered as works to keep cultural and historical marks of Go Co village for thousands of years. Of the 12 old wells present in Go Co village, there are 3 wells (Ba Thang well, Madam Mia well, Mr. Lich well) which are ancient stone wells, a feature that shows the existence of the Cham Pa class. used to live in the area (from the 7th century to the 15th century). The rest of the wells have been inherited by the people of Go Co the old Cham well, that is the well wall is granite which is arranged in a natural way, snugly from bottom to mouth, no need to trim or use cement. The wells are built on hard rock, located in underground waterways or near streams.

The weather in Go Co village in summer is mostly long and sunny, so finding and storing a water source is extremely important. Before, when the water pump pipe had not returned to the village, the water source for domestic use was mainly self-sufficient and mostly came from these ancient wells. Residents have to get up at 3 am to go and carry water to get the first precious water cans. Boats, where passing through the village, often stop by to ask for water from the well to continue their long journey at sea. The water from these wells is very clear and sweet, and even potable. After 1975, the natural forests around the village were replaced by eucalyptus plantations, which absorb a lot of groundwater. As a result, streams and some wells gradually dried up. However, these ancient wells are still there as a testament to history and culture in the past. Here are some typical wells in the village:

Ong Duong Well

The well is 7m deep and 2m in diameter. The well wall is made up of naturally layered rocks. According to villagers, the well was dug by Mr. Duong more than two hundred years ago and is later called after his name.

Ong Quang well

Mr. Quang wells has a diameter of about 1.5m well mouth, depth of about 9m. The well was dug by Mr. Quang more than a hundred years ago, so it is named after him. The well wall is made up of rock stratified from the mouth to the bottom of the well. In the past, the well was the main source of water for small residential clusters, people used the water source for living and cultivation.

Mrs. Mia’s Well

Ba Mia well is one of three Cham wells (existed between the 7th and 15th centuries) in Go Co village. The well is about 1.5m in diameter and 8-10m in depth. The well always has water. In the past and now, the well is still used by local people for domestic use. The structure of the well is cascade rock. Later, people in the area used cement to remodel the well. People here do not know since when, only know since the ancestors set foot on this land has a well. The well was placed on Mia’s land so people have called it so that it is easy to remember.

Bodhi Well

Bo De well has the diameter of the well mouth about 1.5m and the depth of about 7m. Well, dug by the villagers for a long time, can be used to get water for the convenience of cooking at Bo De shrine. Previously, there was a very large bodhi tree near the well, so people called it “Bodhi well”, but now the Bodhi tree is no longer there. The well still has water, the water is very clear and sweet, the water is no longer used for domestic use but is still used for cultivation.

Mr. Lich’s well (Mrs. My well)

The well existed long before the people lived here and is one of the three remaining Cham wells in the village (built between the 7th to the 15th century). The well’s structure is quite strange with cascading rocks. The well is located on the land of Mr. Lich’s house, currently Mr. Lich is no longer alive, his son is Mrs. My, so the villagers call it Mrs. My well. Currently the well is still used for domestic use and cultivation.

Ong Lien well

Mr. Lien wells have a diameter of about 1.5m well mouth, depth of about 5m from about 200-300 years. The well was dug by Mr. Lien on his land, so people put the well after him. The well is very beautiful and the well water is very clear and sweet, although people in the abandoned village have left, the well is not affected by external impacts.

Mrs. Thuong’s well

This is one of three ancient Cham wells in existence in the village. The well is located on the land of Ms. Thuong’s house, so people named after her. The well has a diameter of the well mouth about 1.2m-1.4m, a depth of about 10m with a layered rock shape. Over time, the well has been remodeled with cement. According to people in the area, wells existed from the time when the Cham Pa people lived in the area. Currently the well still has water, but people no longer use it. Most of the people in the surrounding area use tap water, so the water in the well is rarely used by people.
